3 Days in London: The Perfect First-Time Itinerary

Three days is enough to fall for London — if you spend them in the right order. This is the itinerary our guides recommend to first-time visitors: one day for royal London, one for the ancient City, and one for the London that locals actually live in.

Day 1: Westminster & Royal London

Start at Westminster Abbey when it opens, walk past Parliament and Big Ben, then up Whitehall to Horse Guards and through St James's Park to Buckingham Palace. Afternoon: the National Gallery on Trafalgar Square. Evening: dinner in Covent Garden.

Day 2: The City & the Tower

Morning at the Tower of London — book the first entry and head straight to the Crown Jewels. Cross Tower Bridge, walk the South Bank to Borough Market for lunch, then return over the river to St Paul's Cathedral and the hidden lanes of the Square Mile.

Day 3: Markets, museums & neighbourhoods

Choose your London: South Kensington's museums, Notting Hill and Portobello Road, or the East End's street art and markets. End with sunset from a high point — the Sky Garden is free if you book ahead.

Getting around

Walk whenever the map says under twenty-five minutes — London reveals itself between the sights. Otherwise use contactless on the Tube; it caps your daily fare automatically.

Three mistakes to avoid

Don't plan more than three big sights a day. Don't eat on the main tourist drags — one street back is always better. And don't skip booking ahead: the Tower, the Abbey and good restaurants all sell out.

Make day one count

Most first-timers lose half a day getting oriented. A three-hour tour with a local guide on your first morning fixes that — you will spend the rest of the trip walking like you know the city.
