The Best Time to Visit London: A Season-by-Season Guide
Every guide gets asked the same question: when should we come? The honest answer is that London works in every season — but each one gives you a different city. Here is what to expect, month by month.
Spring (March – May)
Parks in blossom, mild days and manageable crowds. The royal parks are at their best, and Easter brings long weekends of events. Pack a rain layer — spring showers are real.
Summer (June – August)
Long evenings, ceremonial season — Trooping the Colour in June — and the city living outdoors. It is also peak season: book tours, restaurants and attractions ahead, and expect queues at the big landmarks.
Autumn (September – October)
Our favourite. September keeps summer's warmth but loses its crowds; October turns the parks gold. The culture calendar restarts, and hotel prices ease.
Winter (November – February)
Christmas lights from mid-November, ice rinks at Somerset House and the Tower, and museums almost to yourself in January. Days are short — plan indoor afternoons.
Our honest answer
For the best balance of weather, light and crowds: late May to mid-June, or September. For atmosphere: December. For value and quiet: January and February.
Whenever you come
A good guide changes the equation more than the weather does. Rain or sun, London's stories are the same — you just need someone to tell them.
