Higher Diploma in Hotel Operations
Course Overview
The Higher Diploma in Hotel Operations at LSCT is a Level 5 qualification within the Hospitality & Tourism department, designed for supervisors and team leaders ready to step into head-of-department and duty-manager appointments. The programme runs 15 to 18 months across on-campus, online and distance-learning routes from 2026, and is taught from our central London base — minutes from the West End hotel cluster, where our placement partners run weekly recruitment.
Across the year you move from operational mechanics into departmental leadership: rooms division, food and beverage, events, revenue management, daily P&L discipline and the people skills that decide whether a 3am shift goes smoothly or fails noisily. By the end of the Higher Diploma in Hotel Operations you will be able to lead a shift, brief a HOD meeting, hold a difficult conversation with a team member under pressure and walk into a duty-manager interview at a London four- or five-star property already speaking the language.
Key Features
- UK Level 5 syllabus aligned with the Institute of Hospitality and UKHospitality leadership frameworks, and informed by working West End general managers.
- Direct articulation into the LSCT BA in Hospitality Management top-up — no credit lost.
- Three study modes — on-campus near the West End, fully online with live operations clinics, or distance learning with structured monthly deadlines.
- Live hotel placement with a London property where places are available — rooms, F&B, events or revenue rotations.
- Daily P&L lab — every student runs a simulated week of hotel P&Ls with revenue, payroll, F&B cost and forecast against actual.
- Module on UK employment law for hospitality supervisors covering shift patterns, tronc, contracts, agency staff and reasonable adjustments.
What You Will Learn
The Higher Diploma in Hotel Operations is built around seven modules and a service-improvement capstone. You will graduate able to run a department, contribute to a forecasting meeting and lead a small team through a difficult shift.
- Rooms Division Leadership and Front Office Management
- Food and Beverage Department Management
- Hotel Events Operations
- Revenue Management for HODs
- Hotel P&L, Cost Control and Daily Trading
- People Management and UK Employment Law for Hospitality
- Service Recovery and Guest Experience Under Pressure
The teaching pattern is intentionally practitioner-led. Each module pairs taught content with at least one operational session — real-style P&L drills, real-style guest-experience walkthroughs, real airline disruption scenarios or real WSET tastings — and you are expected to make decisions under time pressure. That working rhythm gives our graduates the day-one credibility UK hotel, restaurant, airline and travel-trade employers ask about at interview.
Who This Course Is For
- Hotel supervisors and team leaders moving into duty-manager and HOD appointments.
- Advanced Diploma graduates topping up to a Level 5 credential before a BA in Hospitality Management.
- Restaurant managers crossing into hotel-based F&B leadership.
- International applicants targeting UK and luxury hospitality leadership careers requiring a recognised Level 5.
Career Pathways
Higher Diploma graduates step into HOD and duty-manager roles across the central London hotel cluster, the major UK branded groups and the rapidly growing lifestyle and serviced-apartment segments. The Higher Diploma in Hotel Operations is calibrated to make you ready for a HOD interview on graduation. Typical first roles include:
- Hotel Duty Manager
- Front Office Manager (mid-scale to upscale)
- Food & Beverage Manager (hotel restaurant or bar)
- Events Manager (hotel and venue)
- Revenue Coordinator (hotel cluster)
- Rooms Division Supervisor (luxury property)
The Higher Diploma articulates directly into the LSCT BA in Hospitality Management and into the MSc in Luxury Hospitality Management.
You will also build the network that underpins UK hospitality, aviation and travel careers: an alumni community across the West End hotel cluster, the major UK restaurant groups, London's six commercial airports and the UK travel-trade head offices, a working tutor team drawn from current practice, and an annual industry careers afternoon at which UK recruiters take CVs and meet current students.
Entry Requirements
- An Advanced Diploma (Level 5), HND, Foundation Degree, or equivalent prior study in hospitality, business or events.
- Three years' relevant work experience in front office, F&B or events considered in lieu of academic prerequisites (mature applicants).
- English language: IELTS 6.0 overall (no band below 5.5) for non-native English speakers; conversational English fluency tested at interview.
- A personal statement and one academic or professional reference, ideally from a hospitality line manager.
Across the programme you work behind the scenes with central London hospitality operators — back-of-house tours, daily P&L discussions, guest-experience walk-throughs and revenue management sessions delivered by working West End general managers and revenue leads. The London cluster sets a global standard for luxury and lifestyle hospitality, and the operational realities you train against here scale straight into international careers.
Why Study at LSCT
The London School of Commerce and Technology (LSCT) is a specialist higher-education provider based in central London and part of Harold International College. We teach in small cohorts so every student is visible to their tutor, run a single intake schedule that students can rely on, and partner with UK professional bodies so qualifications carry weight with employers. London puts Whitehall, the City, Silicon Roundabout, the Royal Courts of Justice, the West End and the NHS estate within a short tube ride of every classroom — and our students use that proximity in their projects, placements and graduate job hunts. For hotel-operations students, that proximity opens doors at the major Mayfair, Marylebone and Knightsbridge properties our placement coordinators visit weekly.
Our graduates work across the UK and international hospitality, aviation and travel industries — Mayfair five-star hotels, branded mid-scale and lifestyle properties, the major UK restaurant groups, London's six commercial airports, the UK carriers and the tour-operator and OTA cluster. LSCT's employability team brokers introductions and runs an annual industry careers fair with named hospitality recruiters present.
