Certificate in Banking Fundamentals
Course Overview
The Certificate in Banking Fundamentals at the London School of International Business and Management (LSIBM) is a short foundation programme for anyone who wants to understand how UK banks make money, manage risk and stay on the right side of the Prudential Regulation Authority. Sitting in the Accounting, Finance & Economics faculty, this three to six months programme introduces retail, commercial and investment banking through the lens of the London market — the clearing banks in the City, the building societies on the high street and the challenger banks pulling deposits online. The Bank of England’s completed SONIA transition, the FCA’s Consumer Duty rulebook and the PRA’s Strong and Simple regime for smaller UK banks give a live regulatory backdrop that every module refers back to.
Over three to six months you will study current accounts, personal and business lending, payment systems, capital rules and the anti-money-laundering framework that every UK bank operates under, working the same case studies drawn from real UK bank annual reports, PRA policy statements and FCA thematic reviews. The Certificate in Banking Fundamentals is delivered on-campus in central London, fully online, or by distance learning. By the end you should be able to read a UK bank’s Pillar 3 disclosure well enough to hold a sensible conversation with a compliance officer, and understand why the pricing on a two-year fixed mortgage moved when the swap curve did. Cohorts include a fortnightly tutor clinic and a written progress log so the assessor can see how thinking has developed across the programme, and short guest sessions with working UK practitioners give students a first live exposure to the discipline as it is practised in London. Every module builds on the last, so by the closing weeks students are working on a small end-to-end brief rather than isolated exercises, and the final portfolio piece is written to a standard that can be shown to a prospective UK employer or admissions tutor with confidence.

What You Will Learn

- How UK retail, commercial and challenger banks are structured and where the profit pools actually sit in each model.
- Current accounts, savings products and the FSCS deposit-protection scheme applied to a real UK customer scenario.
- Personal and business lending, credit scoring and affordability testing under the FCA Consumer Duty.
- UK payment rails — Bacs, Faster Payments, CHAPS, card networks and the Pay.UK New Payments Architecture in outline.
- Introduction to Basel III/IV capital rules and how a UK bank measures risk-weighted assets under PRA rules.
- Anti-money-laundering, sanctions screening under OFSI and the customer due-diligence file expected by the FCA.
