Certificate in Business Studies
Course Overview
The Certificate in Business Studies at the London School of International Business and Management (LSIBM) gives new entrants the working vocabulary a UK company uses every day — sales, operations, finance, marketing, HR, procurement and governance — plus the confidence to read an annual report, a board pack or a management-accounts summary without getting lost. Sitting in the Business & Management faculty, this short programme is a genuine breadth foundation, not a specialism.
The Certificate is designed for school-leavers picking a discipline, first-jobbers finding their footing in a corporate environment, and career changers stepping into a UK office role. Content is aligned with the CMI Level 3 syllabus and referenced against the IoD's director-training foundations, and the programme is available on-campus in central London, fully online, or by distance learning. Reference is made to the UK Corporate Governance Code, Companies House filing calendar, and the CMI Level 3 competency framework so learners graduate with a working map of how a UK company is actually organised and reported.
Teaching runs in small tutor-visible cohorts with weekly seminar discussions, a diagnostic in week one, formative quizzes that build to a single summative case study, and a fortnightly practitioner clinic where students can bring live questions to a working professional. Applicants who prefer flexibility can join the fully online cohort — the same materials, the same tutor, the same intake calendar — with recorded live sessions and asynchronous discussion boards so working students never fall behind.

What You Will Learn
The Certificate teaches the working language of a UK business — the terminology, the org-chart logic, and the day-to-day interactions between functions that a new joiner is expected to pick up in their first six months. The aim is fluency, not depth.
- The functional map of a UK company — sales, marketing, operations, finance, HR, procurement, IT and legal.
- Reading a UK annual report — the strategic report, financial statements and governance statement.
- The commercial vocabulary of margin, contribution, cash and working capital.
- Introduction to UK corporate structures — sole trader, partnership, Ltd, PLC and Companies House filings.
- The commercial cycle — quote to cash, purchase to pay, hire to retire.
- Introductory marketing and the CIM's segmentation, targeting and positioning framework.
- Introductory HR and the employee lifecycle referenced to the CIPD Profession Map.
- Business ethics, the UK Corporate Governance Code and modern-slavery disclosure basics.
- Reading a UK statutory filing at Companies House and identifying who a company's directors are.
- Simple stakeholder mapping using established UK CSR and ESG frameworks.
- Preparing a short internal briefing note in the format a UK line manager expects.
Who This Course Is For
- School-leavers exploring whether a business, management or commerce degree suits them.
- Administrators, executive assistants and receptionists moving into commercial support roles.
- Career changers entering their first UK corporate role from teaching, hospitality or the arts.
- Family-business successors preparing to inherit operational responsibility.
- International students building UK business literacy before a diploma or Bachelor's.
- Small-business family members and administrators taking on wider operational responsibility.
Career Pathways
Graduates of the Certificate typically move into UK office-support and coordinator roles across mid-market firms, professional services and shared-service centres. The Certificate supports applications but does not by itself substitute for a specialist qualification. Typical destinations include:
- Business Administrator
- Operations Coordinator
- Executive Assistant
- Junior Business Analyst
- Sales Support Executive
- Office Manager (small firm)
- Team Administrator
- Business Support Officer
The Certificate is the natural step onto the LSIBM Diploma in Business Administration or a CMI Level 3 Award progression route.
The Certificate is a credible stepping stone toward the LSIBM Diploma in Business Administration, an apprenticeship with a mid-market UK employer, or the first CMI professional-body membership tier.
Entry Requirements
- Open access — GCSE-level English and Mathematics at grade 4/C (or international equivalent) is the working baseline.
- Applicants over 18 are welcome regardless of prior qualifications, provided a short statement of intent is submitted.
- IELTS 5.5 overall (no band below 5.0) for non-native English speakers, or an equivalent test at CEFR B2.
- Two personal references — one professional, one academic; work-based references accepted for career changers.
Why Study at LSIBM

We teach in small cohorts so every student is visible to their tutor, run a single intake schedule that students can rely on, and partner with UK professional bodies — CMI, CIM, CIPD, ACCA, CIMA, CFA UK, CIPS and IOE&IT — so qualifications carry weight with employers.
London puts the City, Canary Wharf, Whitehall, Companies House, the FCA, the Bank of England and the West End within a short tube ride of every classroom. LSIBM Certificate students frequently attend evening events at the CMI, IoD Pall Mall clubhouse, and CIM London — building a working professional network alongside their studies.
