General English

General English at London School of Languages

Most language students don't need an exam-prep crammer or a business-only course. They need to get noticeably better at speaking, listening, reading and writing English — the everyday English they'll actually use at work, with colleagues, on the phone, in shops, at university interviews, and on visits to friends and family. That's exactly what the General English course is built for.

The General English course at London School of Languages is our most popular programme, and the one we recommend for almost everyone starting out. It works at every level — complete beginner through to advanced — and the placement test on day one makes sure you join a group at the right speed for you.

Why General English Works

You learn a language by using it, not by reading about it. Our General English classes are deliberately built around communication: most of the lesson is you speaking, listening and writing, with the teacher correcting, prompting and adding vocabulary as you go. The grammar is there in the background — but it's the engine, not the destination.

Class sizes are small enough that you can't hide. If you're someone who's studied English for years but never gained confidence speaking it, the General English course will feel different from school — uncomfortable at first, then quickly transformative.

Who This Course Suits

  • Adult learners building English fluency for work, travel or general life in the UK.
  • International students preparing to study in an English-language environment.
  • Professionals whose careers require steady, confident English.
  • Long-time English speakers who've never quite become comfortable speaking.

How It Runs

The General English programme is offered on-campus in central London and online, with full-time and part-time schedules. A short placement test at the start puts you in a group at your level, and you move up groups as your level improves. Intakes run regularly throughout the year so you can start when it suits you.

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum age 16 (younger learners by arrangement).
  • A short placement test on or before your first day.
  • No prior certification needed.

Frequently asked questions.

Common questions about General English.

General English builds broad everyday fluency — speaking, listening, reading, writing — for life, work and study generally. Academic English is exam-focused (IELTS, Cambridge). Professional English is workplace-focused. If you're not sure which to pick, General English is usually the right starting point.

Yes — beginners are very welcome. The placement test puts you in a starter-level group, and the teaching style is built around learners who don't yet have much confidence. You'll speak from the first lesson, in short bursts that build up over weeks.

It varies a lot, but a common pattern is: noticeable improvement in confidence within 4–6 weeks, real working competence in 3–6 months of regular study, and IELTS-pass level English in 6–12 months for most learners starting from intermediate. We'll set realistic expectations during your placement.

Yes. We run online General English groups designed for students who can't be in London. The same teaching style applies — small groups, lots of speaking practice.

That depends on where you start and how long you study. Our system uses the CEFR levels (A1 through C2). Each group sits at a specific CEFR level, and you move up as you progress.

Fees vary by full-time vs part-time and by intake. Click Enrol Now or contact admissions for the latest fee schedule.
