BEng in Construction Engineering
Course Overview
The BEng in Construction Engineering at the London School of Commerce and Technology (LSCT) is a three-year UK honours degree for students who want to engineer the buildings, transport and infrastructure UK cities depend on. It sits within our Engineering & Science department and is delivered on-campus in central London, fully online and by distance learning.
You will study structures, materials, construction processes, digital construction and the contractual, safety and net-zero frameworks UK projects now run under. By the end of the degree you will have completed an industry placement and a capstone design project benchmarked to real UK construction practice.
Key Features of the BEng in Construction Engineering
- ICE and CIOB-aligned content drawing on Institution of Civil Engineers and Chartered Institute of Building guidance.
- Three study modes — on-campus, online with weekly live tutorials, or distance learning.
- Year-two placement on a UK construction or consultancy site.
- BIM and ISO 19650 information-management labs.
- Net-zero construction stream across the three years.
- Capstone design project with industry feedback.
- Live London site visits across HS2 nodes, Thames Tideway and Battersea-area schemes.
UK Construction Context
UK construction has been reshaped by the Building Safety Act 2022, the National Infrastructure Strategy, the rolling water-industry AMP cycle and the Net Zero embodied-carbon push. Graduate engineers are now expected to read a programme of works, run a basic Eurocode design and contribute to a federated digital model on day one. The BEng in Construction Engineering is sequenced against that hiring reality, with the Building Safety Act and ISO 19650 information management threaded through every applied module.
What You Will Learn on the BEng in Construction Engineering
The BEng builds the technical, contractual and people skills the next generation of UK construction engineers will need.
- Structural engineering and materials science.
- Geotechnics and foundations.
- Construction processes and site engineering.
- Building information modelling and digital construction.
- JCT and NEC4 UK construction contracts.
- Construction safety and the Building Safety Act regime.
- Sustainability, net zero and embodied carbon.
- Project management for construction.
- Research methods and the design dissertation.
- Site safety, CDM regulations and the Principal Designer role.
Assessment combines exam-style technical papers, design coursework, a placement report and a final-year design dissertation defended at an ICE-style review. Studio sessions are run with working engineers in the room, and every cohort presents a capstone design at an open critique evening attended by ICE-registered engineers from London consultancies.
Placement and Career Support
Tutors include working site engineers, structural designers and contracts managers drawn from UK Tier 1 contractors and mid-size London consultancies. The placement year is supervised by a chartered engineer at the host firm and contributes to the Engineering Council UK Initial Professional Development record. The careers strand maps the IPD framework against student CVs, runs CV and assessment-centre prep for graduate-engineer schemes, and supports applications across Tier 1 contractors, design consultancies and infrastructure clients.
Who This Course Is For
- A-level leavers aiming for a graduate engineering role on UK construction projects.
- International students seeking a UK-aligned construction engineering honours degree.
- Trade professionals moving into engineering and design roles.
- Career changers from architecture or surveying broadening into engineering.
Career Pathways
LSCT BEng graduates progress into UK construction consultancies, contractors and infrastructure programmes, including major London developments and national rail, water and energy schemes. Typical first roles include:
- Graduate Site Engineer
- Graduate Structural Engineer
- Construction Project Engineer
- BIM Coordinator (junior)
- Building Safety Engineer
- Sustainability Engineer (construction)
The BEng also supports applications for chartership via ICE, CIOB and the Engineering Council UK after the required work experience.
Entry Requirements
- Three A-levels at grades BBC or above (Maths and a science preferred), or an equivalent UK / international qualification.
- GCSE English Language at grade 5/C and Mathematics at grade 5/C (or equivalent) — Maths weighted for this programme.
- IELTS 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0) for non-native English speakers.
- A personal statement; mature applicants (21+) may apply with a portfolio of construction work and a short interview.
Why Study at LSCT
The London School of Commerce and Technology (LSCT) is a specialist higher-education provider based in central London and part of Harold International College. We teach in small cohorts so every student is visible to their tutor, run a single intake schedule that students can rely on, and partner with UK professional bodies so qualifications carry weight with employers. London puts Whitehall, the City, Silicon Roundabout, the Royal Courts of Justice, the West End and the NHS estate within a short tube ride of every classroom — and our students use that proximity in their projects, placements and graduate job hunts. Construction engineering students gain field-visit access to live UK schemes across rail, housing and major London developments.
