BSc in Risk Management
Course Overview
The BSc in Risk Management at LSCT is a three-year honours degree designed for students aiming at the City's risk, compliance and assurance functions — the teams that decide whether a bank, insurer, asset manager or critical-infrastructure operator gets to keep doing business. Taught from our central London base and accessible through on-campus, online and distance-learning routes from 2026, the degree drills enterprise risk, operational risk, financial risk and the FCA / PRA regulatory landscape graduates actually walk into.
You will work on real-style risk registers, control libraries and capital-adequacy calculations from your first term, sit through guest sessions led by working risk officers, and finish with a final-year project mapped to a real UK regulated firm or critical-infrastructure operator. By the end of the BSc in Risk Management you will be able to write a board-quality risk appetite statement and challenge a control owner without losing the meeting.
Key Features
- UK honours degree aligned with the Institute of Risk Management (IRM) and Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) syllabuses for early-career exemptions.
- Direct exposure to FCA and PRA frameworks — SMCR, ICAAP, ORSA and the UK Operational Resilience regime.
- Three study modes — on-campus near the City, fully online with live risk-committee simulations, or distance learning with monthly deadlines.
- Year-two placement with a UK risk, audit or insurance team where places are available.
- Risk modelling lab using Excel, Python and basic VaR / Monte Carlo for operational and market risk.
- Final-year specialism — choose between financial risk, operational and cyber risk, or ESG and climate risk.
What You Will Learn
The BSc in Risk Management is built around three pillars: identify, quantify and govern. You will graduate able to run a risk-and-control self-assessment workshop with a business owner and articulate the difference between inherent and residual risk to a non-specialist board member.
- Enterprise Risk Management and Risk Appetite
- Operational Risk, Resilience and Third-Party Risk
- Financial Risk — Credit, Market and Liquidity
- UK Financial Regulation (FCA, PRA, FSMA, SMCR)
- Information Security and Cyber Risk
- ESG and Climate Risk for UK Firms
- Internal Audit, Assurance and the Three Lines Model
- Risk Analytics, VaR and Scenario Modelling
- Insurance Principles and Captive Programmes
The teaching pattern is intentionally practitioner-led. Each module pairs taught content with at least one applied exercise — a real published filing, a working consulting deck, an actual board paper or a live UK regulatory question — and you are expected to read, comment and contribute. That working rhythm gives our graduates the day-one credibility UK commercial employers test at interview, and is part of why our placement and graduate-job conversion rates compare well with much larger UK providers.
Who This Course Is For
- A-level leavers targeting graduate schemes in risk, audit or compliance at City banks, insurers and Big Four firms.
- Junior risk, audit or compliance staff topping up to a recognised UK honours degree.
- International applicants targeting UK financial-services or critical-infrastructure careers.
- Career changers from operations, IT, project management or the Civil Service entering UK risk and assurance roles.
Career Pathways
BSc in Risk Management graduates enter the assurance pipelines of the City and the wider regulated economy — from challenger banks in Canary Wharf to Lloyd's of London syndicates, from infrastructure operators to NHS finance teams. The degree is calibrated to make you immediately useful in a second-line risk function from your first month. Typical graduate roles include:
- Risk Analyst (bank, insurer, asset manager)
- Operational Risk Officer (regulated firm)
- Compliance Officer (FCA-regulated)
- Internal Audit Associate
- Insurance Underwriter (Lloyd's syndicate or composite insurer)
- Business Continuity and Resilience Analyst
The degree provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in Risk, Finance or Cyber Risk, and for IRM and CII professional qualifications.
You will also build the network that underpins UK commercial careers: an alumni community across the FTSE 250, the consultancies and the scale-up cluster, a working tutor team drawn from current practice, and an annual industry careers afternoon at which UK recruiters take CVs and book follow-up conversations with current students.
Entry Requirements
- Three A-levels at grades BBC or above, or an equivalent UK / international qualification (IB 28+, BTEC DMM, Foundation Year pass) — Mathematics at A-level is preferred but not required for this programme.
- GCSE English Language at grade 5/C and Mathematics at grade 4/C (or equivalent).
- IELTS 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0) for non-native English speakers.
- A personal statement; mature applicants (21+) may apply with a CV evidencing risk, audit, insurance or compliance experience.
Across the programme you build the commercial fluency UK boards now expect at every level: clean numbers, sharp written communication, defensible decisions and the ability to read a room. Guest sessions with working consultants, finance leaders and senior operators give you direct insight into how UK businesses actually run quarterly reviews, board meetings and strategic decisions under pressure.
Why Study at LSCT
The London School of Commerce and Technology (LSCT) is a specialist higher-education provider based in central London and part of Harold International College. We teach in small cohorts so every student is visible to their tutor, run a single intake schedule that students can rely on, and partner with UK professional bodies so qualifications carry weight with employers. London puts Whitehall, the City, Silicon Roundabout, the Royal Courts of Justice, the West End and the NHS estate within a short tube ride of every classroom — and our students use that proximity in their projects, placements and graduate job hunts. For risk students that proximity matters: from Lombard Street to Lloyd's, the FCA at Stratford and the Bank of England at Threadneedle, the UK's regulatory and risk centre of gravity is on our doorstep.
Our graduates work across the London commercial economy — from the Magic Circle adjacencies of the City to the SaaS clusters around Old Street, the consulting houses of the West End and the FTSE 250 head offices that span Mayfair to Paddington. LSCT's employability team keeps an annual employer map current and brokers introductions where it can, and our alumni network spans UK firms and international employers.
