BSc in Business Economics
Course Overview
The BSc in Business Economics at the London School of International Business and Management (LSIBM) is a three-year UK honours degree inside the Accounting, Finance & Economics faculty, written for students targeting applied-economics roles at consultancies, UK PLC in-house teams and Whitehall departments. It combines the core business curriculum with a full applied-economics specialism — micro, macro, pricing, competition, regulatory economics and applied econometrics.
You will complete an in-house economist or consulting placement in year two, work on a live UK sector brief in year three, and produce a dissertation defended in front of a working consulting economist. The BSc in Business Economics is available on-campus in central London, fully online with UK / APAC cohort calls, and by distance learning from 2026.
Key Features
- Curriculum reviewed against Society of Business Economists, RES and GES practitioner materials.
- Three study modes — central London campus, fully online with UK / APAC calls, or distance learning.
- Year-two placement at a UK consultancy, PLC in-house team or Whitehall department.
- Final-year dissertation defended in front of a working consulting economist.
- Applied econometrics teaching — regressions, panel data, causal inference.
- Regulatory-economics workshop using published CMA case-shape material.
What You Will Learn
The degree is structured around what a working applied economist actually delivers — a defensible pricing recommendation, a competition-analysis file, a regulatory response, a sector view for a board. You will graduate able to lead a small analysis workstream at consultancy level.
- Applied microeconomics — demand, supply, elasticity in real UK sectors.
- Applied macroeconomics — inflation, rates, growth and their commercial read.
- Regulatory economics — CMA, Ofcom, Ofgem, Ofwat frameworks.
- Competition analysis — market definition, SSNIP, concentration measures.
- Applied econometrics — regressions, panel data, causal inference.
- Pricing strategy and dynamic pricing.
- Sector cycles and defensible sector views.
- Behavioural economics in UK contexts.
- Reading BoE MPC, OBR and NIESR forecasts.
- Dissertation research methods and applied-economics writing.

- Policy Analyst (economics)
The BSc in Business Economics is the natural step onto the MSc in Business Economics and Society of Business Economists junior membership.
Entry Requirements
- Three A-levels at BBC or above, or equivalent UK / international qualification (IB 28+, BTEC DMM, Access to HE, Foundation Year pass, or a relevant Higher Diploma with confirmed credit transfer) — comfort with quantitative reasoning is expected because the degree uses econometrics.
- GCSE English Language at grade 5/C and Mathematics at grade 4/C (or equivalent).
- IELTS 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0) for non-native English speakers.
- A personal statement showing genuine curiosity about the UK economy and applied economics. Mature applicants (21+) may enter with a portfolio and a short interview.
