Diploma in Business Planning
Course Overview
The Diploma in Business Planning at the London School of International Business and Management (LSIBM) is a Level 4 practitioner qualification inside the Entrepreneurship & Executive Studies faculty. Across 9 to 12 months it moves students from a first plan on paper to an investor-ready one — a working business model, a 24-month forecast, a funding narrative that survives due diligence, and a defensible view on unit economics anchored in the current SEIS/EIS reliefs and the British Business Bank’s Start Up Loans data.
Study is on-campus in central London, fully online, or by distance learning. Content is designed around the CMI Level 4 in Management and Leadership and the Institute of Consulting framework, with SEIS and EIS teaching for UK-domiciled ventures and continual reference to Companies House incorporation, HMRC PAYE and VAT registration realities. The diploma closes with a live investor pitch reviewed by a working UK angel or high-street business banker.

- Portfolio-plus-pitch assessment combining the written plan with a ten-slide oral defence.
- Direct progression onto the LSIBM Advanced Diploma in Business Planning & Strategy with credit transfer.
What You Will Learn
The diploma is anchored in the working moments of an early-stage business — the operating plan, the fundraising conversation, the hiring plan, the board pack at month six when the numbers stop lining up with the pitch deck. You will finish able to write a real plan and defend it under investor questioning without hedging.
- Business-model design and iteration under real customer signal.
- Market sizing at UK level without inflating past the credibility line.
- Unit economics — CAC, LTV, contribution and payback.
- Twenty-four-month cash-flow forecast with sensitivity analysis.
- Funding narrative — grant, debt, angel, SEIS, EIS and Innovate UK routes.
- Team, roles and hiring plan at seed stage.
- KPI framework and monthly board pack basics.
- Investor Q&A — the questions that break weak plans.
- UK compliance essentials for a growing business — Companies House, HMRC Making Tax Digital and PAYE.
- Basic financial modelling in Excel or Google Sheets without formula sprawl.
- Writing a ten-slide deck a UK investor will read to slide ten.
Who This Course Is For
- Early-stage founders raising a first seed or grant round.
- Strategy analysts at UK SMEs and mid-market groups supporting a founder or MD.
- Corporate-venture team analysts building internal business cases.
- Family-business successors taking over the operating plan.
- Career changers moving from consulting or operations into founder roles.
Career Pathways
Graduates typically move into business-planning, strategy-analyst and founder roles at UK ventures, corporate-venture teams and consultancies. The diploma supports strong applications but does not by itself guarantee funding or offers — execution evidence still matters. Typical destinations include:
- Business Planner
- Strategy Analyst
- Founder / Owner-Manager
- Startup Programme Manager
- Corporate Venture Analyst
- Family-Business Successor
- Small-Business Growth Adviser
The Diploma in Business Planning is the natural step onto the LSIBM Advanced Diploma in Business Planning & Strategy and toward CMI Level 4 recognition. Graduates commonly progress toward IOEE Enterprise Educator status or full Chartered Manager registration within eighteen months.
Entry Requirements
- A relevant Certificate (Level 3) or equivalent — mature applicants with two years of professional experience are welcomed on a portfolio route, and a founder story or portfolio strengthens an application.
- GCSE English Language at grade 4/C and Mathematics at grade 4/C (or international equivalent).
- IELTS 5.5 overall (no band below 5.0) for non-native English speakers.
- A short statement of intent and one academic or professional reference.
Why Study at LSIBM
The London School of International Business and Management (LSIBM) is a specialist business-education provider based in central London and part of Harold International College. We teach in small cohorts so every student is visible to their tutor, run a single intake schedule that students can rely on, and partner with UK professional bodies — CMI, CIM, CIPD, ACCA, CIMA, CFA UK, CIPS and IOE&IT — so qualifications carry weight with employers.
London puts the City, Canary Wharf, Whitehall, Companies House, the FCA, the Bank of England and the West End within a short tube ride of every classroom. Diploma cohorts run structured cohort clinics with working practitioners — a Big-Four tax adviser, a CIM Fellow in marketing, a CIPD-chartered HR director — so students meet professional expectations well before graduation.
