MSc in Business Intelligence

Course Overview

Operating data has become the running commentary of UK business — and the MSc in Business Intelligence at LSCT is the one-year postgraduate degree that trains you to write that commentary properly. Sitting inside the Business & Commerce department and taught from our central London base across on-campus, online and distance-learning routes from 2026, the programme builds the end-to-end BI stack that employers actually buy: SQL warehouses, ETL, dimensional modelling, Power BI dashboards, advanced analytics and the soft skills that get a dashboard adopted instead of ignored.

You will work on real-style retail, banking and public-sector data sets from week one, ship a deployed dashboard, run an A/B test, and complete a dissertation on a UK business question you choose. By the end of the MSc in Business Intelligence you will have a deployed portfolio, a confident grasp of UK GDPR for analysts, and the language to walk into a Power BI or data-analyst interview as a peer.

Key Features

  • UK postgraduate degree mapped to BCS (The Chartered Institute for IT) competencies and aligned with PMI / APM project frameworks for BI delivery.
  • Power BI & Tableau dual track — the dashboard tools UK retail, banking and public-sector employers actually deploy.
  • Three study modes — on-campus near the City, fully online with live data-modelling labs, or distance learning with monthly assessment sprints.
  • End-to-end BI lab — you build a star-schema warehouse, populate it with real-style data and ship a dashboard a stakeholder can use.
  • Module on UK GDPR for analysts covering anonymisation, pseudonymisation and lawful basis for BI use cases.
  • Industry-linked dissertation with a London BI team in retail, banking, fintech or the public sector where places are available.

What You Will Learn

The MSc in Business Intelligence runs across three taught semesters plus a dissertation. You will graduate able to model a warehouse, build an ETL pipeline, write performant SQL, produce a board-ready dashboard and explain ROI to a non-technical executive.

  • SQL for Analysts and Performance Tuning
  • Dimensional Modelling and the Modern Data Warehouse
  • ETL / ELT with Python and dbt
  • Dashboard Design and Storytelling (Power BI, Tableau)
  • Statistical Foundations and A/B Testing
  • Applied Machine Learning for Analysts
  • Cloud Analytics on Azure Synapse / AWS Redshift / Snowflake
  • UK GDPR and Data Ethics for Analysts
  • BI Project Delivery and Stakeholder Management

The teaching pattern is intentionally practitioner-led. Each module pairs taught content with at least one applied exercise — a real published filing, a working consulting deck, an actual board paper or a live UK regulatory question — and you are expected to read, comment and contribute. That working rhythm gives our graduates the day-one credibility UK commercial employers test at interview, and is part of why our placement and graduate-job conversion rates compare well with much larger UK providers.

Who This Course Is For

  • Graduates from business, economics, computer science or numerate social sciences entering UK data careers.
  • Working analysts, junior data engineers and reporting staff stepping up to senior BI roles.
  • Career changers from finance, operations or marketing moving into analytics-led decision support.
  • International applicants targeting UK Skilled Worker visa-eligible data and BI positions.

Career Pathways

MSc graduates feed the BI and analytics teams of London's retail giants, challenger banks, NHS data teams and the UK public sector. The MSc in Business Intelligence is calibrated to make you productive against real tickets within weeks of joining a team. Typical graduate roles include:

  • Business Intelligence Analyst
  • Data Analyst (retail, banking, public sector)
  • BI Developer (Power BI / Tableau / Looker)
  • Junior Data Engineer (warehouse and pipelines)
  • Decision Support Analyst (NHS, local authority)
  • Analytics Consultant (Big Four or boutique)

The MSc also serves as a strong foundation for further postgraduate research in data science, decision analytics or applied AI.

You will also build the network that underpins UK commercial careers: an alumni community across the FTSE 250, the consultancies and the scale-up cluster, a working tutor team drawn from current practice, and an annual industry careers afternoon at which UK recruiters take CVs and book follow-up conversations with current students.

Entry Requirements

  • A UK 2:2 honours degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant or numerate subject.
  • Applicants from non-cognate fields may apply with five years' senior professional experience in analytics, reporting or operations roles.
  • IELTS 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0) for non-native English speakers; comfortable SQL or Excel literacy will be tested at induction.
  • A personal statement, two references and a short analytical sample (a SQL query, a Power BI report or a Kaggle notebook) demonstrating practical aptitude.

Across the programme you build the commercial fluency UK boards now expect at every level: clean numbers, sharp written communication, defensible decisions and the ability to read a room. Guest sessions with working consultants, finance leaders and senior operators give you direct insight into how UK businesses actually run quarterly reviews, board meetings and strategic decisions under pressure.

Why Study at LSCT

The London School of Commerce and Technology (LSCT) is a specialist higher-education provider based in central London and part of Harold International College. We teach in small cohorts so every student is visible to their tutor, run a single intake schedule that students can rely on, and partner with UK professional bodies so qualifications carry weight with employers. London puts Whitehall, the City, Silicon Roundabout, the Royal Courts of Justice, the West End and the NHS estate within a short tube ride of every classroom — and our students use that proximity in their projects, placements and graduate job hunts. For BI students that proximity matters: London hosts more enterprise BI teams per square mile than any other European city, and our admissions team brokers introductions where it can.

Our graduates work across the London commercial economy — from the Magic Circle adjacencies of the City to the SaaS clusters around Old Street, the consulting houses of the West End and the FTSE 250 head offices that span Mayfair to Paddington. LSCT's employability team keeps an annual employer map current and brokers introductions where it can, and our alumni network spans UK firms and international employers.
